The Walk Porlock walkers marathon is a challenging 26 mile/42 km walk which can be done over one or two days.

'Event postponed due to Corona virus social distancing policy - impacted parties to be contacted as soon as possible'

Walk descriptions

On Saturday, the first 13 miles/21k starts off gently, with a woodland walk to the pretty harbour village of Porlock Weir and then along the edge of Porlock Marsh, featuring a unique pebble ridge beach and tidal salt marsh, to the quaint village of Bossington.

From Bossington woodland and farmland paths take you to the picturesque National Trust thatched cottage village of Selworthy, before you climb up to Selworthy Beacon (308m) with a 360 degree view over the Dunkery Beacon moorlands, the Exmoor coastal bluffs towards Lynmouth and the Bristol channel to Wales.

This then follows a section of the Rugged South West Coast Path to the Bossington Head high path with panoramic views back over Porlock and Bossington before descending down through woods and farmland to Bossington and then Porlock.

The second 13 miles/21k can be walked on Saturday to make a full, one-day marathon, or Sunday, either as a one-off or to make a marathon over two-days. The walk takes you to the other side of Porlock Vale and climbs up and through ancient woodlands and moorlands to Dunkery Beacon (519m) - another, even more far-reaching 360 panorama. It takes in the atmospheric Victorian Nutscale reservoir and its pretty feeder streams and meadows on the way up. Then the dramatic descent is down through the Horner wooded valley.

Exmoor ponies, red deer and highland cattle are frequently spotted on this route, and much of the route is alongside tumbling woodland streams.

On Sunday, as an alternative to the second half marathon there will be a 10km circular walk up and around Ley Hill, an area of moorland above Porlock that will give you the chance to look back over the scenery you walked through on Saturday, and will give you a flavour of the longer walk.

Please note these are challenging walks aimed at experienced walkers with an appropriate level of fitness.

You'll be fording streams, using small paths across rough ground and climbing steep hills.
